Sodom Was Real

On Monday and Tuesday of this week the first readings at mass were about the destruction of Sodom. Pretty sobering considering the state that America is in now! One has to wonder what will happen to America.
Too often modern Americans consider Sodom just a story made up by bigots. However, archaeologists have been excavating Sodom and found something did happen there. They believe that it was hit by meteorites.
Knowing this Christians need to take a good long look at the 18th chapter of Genesis, the conversation between God and Abraham; God’s mercy was so great that He was willing to spare Sodom if only 10 righteous people could be found out of a population of several thousand. I believe that the same principle applies to America. Despite our sinfulness we have not yet been destroyed no matter how bad we’ve gotten.
We are called to be the righteous people who save America from destruction. It is too easy to look at what is going on and point fingers and feel righteous because we’re not as bad as the Gosnells and other people we see on the news. But we are not called to live by the world’s standards but by God’s.
We need to look to ourselves and see how we need to change. Are we guilty of greed? Are we guilty of exploitation? Are we guilty of failing to love our neighbor? Do we love those who aren’t like us? Do we try to understand and respect the way others are different? Are we really as generous as we can be?
Have we bought into the world’s standards of morality in terms of our entertainment choices? Are the shows and movies we watch clean or are we watching the best of the bad?
What about the way we use our mouth? Is our language holy? Are we prone to gossip? Are we tearing other people apart, destroying their reputations? Are we judgmental?
Are we like the Pharisees able to see everyone’s faults but their own? Is it all about us? Are we like them the center of our universe or is God?
Is God really the center of our lives? Would our checkbooks reflect this? Do we pray as much as we ought to or only one hour on Sunday and when we’re in trouble?
Instead of pointing to all the evil we need to change ourselves first. We need to pray and listen to the Holy Spirit. We need to be the righteous who save this country.
