Thoughts on the Road to Emmaus
Have you ever really that about the story of the disciples who walked to Emmaus with Jesus? We all know that they didn’t recognize Him until the breaking of the bread. What about all of the people who passed them by? No one recognized Jesus either. Why not?
Could it be the reason no one recognized them was because they didn’t expect to see Him? After all they knew He died on Good Friday. Who would expect to see a man crucified walking to Emmaus? So they walked past Him without thinking twice.
Are we like that? Do we fail to see Jesus because we don’t expect to see Him? Do we go to mass expecting nothing? Do we receive Communion and not expect Jesus to do anything? Has Communion become an empty ritual rather than an encounter with the living God? Are we missing out on the blessings God wants to give us because of our low expectations?
Are we missing him elsewhere because of our low expectations? Do we fail to recognize His presence in our brothers and sisters, the Poor and wounded in society? Are we missing opportunities to serve Him because we don’t recognize Him due to our preconceived expectations? How much are we missing?
