There is power in the Eucharist

How many of us really believe that a miracle is possible when we receive Jesus in the Eucharist? Why not? Jesus is present in all of His divinity and power. His power is not watered down nor diluted. He is fully God present in the Eucharist. In Hebrews 13:8 we learn that “Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever”. That means the same Jesus who healed the paralytic, raised Lazarus and fed 5000 is present in the Eucharist. In the gospels Jesus healed all those who came to Him in faith. So why don’t we expect or witness miracles?
Maybe because too many of us are like the people of Nazareth. All they could see was the same person who grew up in Nazareth, the carpenter’s son. Jesus did not perform many miracles in Nazareth because of their lack of faith. We see only a wafer and expect nothing so that is what we get.
More likely though we are held back by our lack of understanding and unwillingness to surrender. Jesus cares about more than our physical health. He is interested in our total well-being, our spiritual, mental, emotional, intellectual, relational well-being as well as our physical health. Too often we aren’t interested in anything but our physical health. We go to Communion unwilling to change, to let go of the anger and resentment that is holding us back. We refuse to let God do what He wants. We refuse to give Him control. We refuse to surrender and let Him do what is best for us. We insist that we know what is best.
We need to ask ourselves what God wants of us. Maybe we need to let go of anger, resentment, a grudge. Perhaps we are being called to forgive someone. Maybe we need to examine our lifestyle and repent of some sin which hurts us. We could be called to turn to a healthier lifestyle. Then we need to ask for the grace to make such changes in our lives; remembering that all things are possible with God.
I often pray over people before the Eucharist. My favorite time is before mass. I always ask that they be totally opened to the graces God wants to give them in the Eucharist. Some times nothing seems to happen out of the normal. Other times people found operations no longer necessary, biopsies negative and healing or operations going better than expected. Most likely there was also spiritual and emotional healing.
Open yourself to the power of Jesus in the Eucharist. Open yourself to receiving the greatest love we can ever know. Open yourself to His loving care and blessings and trust Jesus.
